Detailed Plot;
Small Worlds was something unique, brilliant and just downright fantastic! It was surrounded by mystery and unsureness but it turned into magic. There was a lot learned about Captain Jack also which was very welcomed. It was much different than anything before it in the Whoniverse and certainly now Torchwood has its own feel, it doesn't seem like 'another Doctor Who spinoff' but instead it has blossomed on its own, into something sublime.
And so it began spookily with a women in a forest (filmed somewhere very close to home in Swansea) and she seemed to be spying. There were lights seen in the wilderness of the wood, was she looking for birds? Were they doves that she was creeping up on? They were flashing. They were fairies. The women, hidden in the leaves, quickly snapped away with her camera. She had these marvels in picture now. But as she was leaving, a grown alien figure was seen. The fairies were not what they seemed.
Jack seemingly was attempting to sleep despite his recent claims to Gwen that he does not need it. He was having flashbacks of a time in his past, a bad time. He was having nightmares. Dead soldiers were seen in his dream, with what looked like petals stuffed in their mouths. What triggered the horrid reminder of the past? Meanwhile, Ianto was still in the hub. He was still working although Jack didn't seem too thrilled, but he wasn't displeased either. Ianto carried on with his job and discovered that there were mysterious weather patterns. Jack seemed to like Ianto's discovery, he seemed he was reluctantly forgiving Ianto for his actions in Cyberwomen.
We're taken to a school and it's home time. A young girl is alone, and a creep of a man is seemingly spying and praying on her. He followed the girl as she lonesomely walked home. He was a sick man. He attempted to kidnap the girl, who would still be in primary school, but he thankfully failed. There was a force, voices had saved the girl from a horrific fate. This girl just seemed like an ordinary young schoolgirl, but she was much more. She knew about these powers- she was special. She happily skipped home as though nothing had happened while the apparent pedophile worriedly attempted escape in his car. The fairies were at work.
Jack was taking Gwen to see the elderly women we had seen at the start of the episode. She was giving a presentation on the fairies but Jack disagreed with this women on her theory. While she claimed they were fairies, Jack said she was wrong, always wrong. He thought they were bad. As the presentation was taking place, the fairies were following the pedophile. He swallowed something from thin air, he was trying to exhale but he was choking on something. He spewed red petals, exactly the same type seen in the flashback of Jack's. Whatever these 'fairies' were, Jack knew about them and they gave him nightmares. As this was happening, Jasmine, the young girl, was at home still oblivious to the fact she was the target of a kidnap. She was special. Nobody could hurt Jasmine, and she knew. This could be dangerous, her potential was huge.
Now in the home of Estelle, the elderly women, a war photo of Jack was seen on the fireplace. Jack quickly corrected Gwen, and the viewer's, assumption and claimed it to be his father. Jack never did nor wanted to talk about his father. That picture seemed too much like Jack, and at that point I believed it to be him. Did he have a relationship with Estelle in the past? I believed it was all him, just like I could see Gwen thought the same. I believed her to be correct. Jack was now shifting the subject, and was talking about the fairies. They're from the dawn of time, they've always been a part of us here on Earth and that the fairies are dangerous. They're like a glimpse, a touch of a spirit and frozen memories. Jack wanted to find them.
More insight into Jasmine was seen. She was certainly unique, very non stereotypical. She liked the fairies, she almost wanted to go out and play with them. It didn't seem like she had a friend. However, there was also some more insight into the fairies. They played tricks with the weather, the story came full circle from the Ianto's earlier discovery. The fairies were up to some tricks. The fairies were protected however, they were undetectable.
The sadistic man who attempted to kidnap Jasmine was now going insane. He was at a police station, and he demanded he be locked up. He now wanted to protect others, but he simply was insane. He was totally mad.
The Torchwood team were now investigating the woods where Estelle had taken the pictures of the fairies. It seemed the fairies were close. At the prison, it sounded like the pedophile was attacked. Torchwood were quickly at the scene and now named as Mark Goodson, the insane man was dead. But the cause of death was certainly unique. In a prison cell with no human interference, he had died of oxygen debt. How was this possible? There were no symptoms. Gwen spots something, and quickly works on the corpse. She puts pliers inside Mark's mouth, and retrieves the deadly red petals. The fear on Jack's face could not be hidden. He'd seen it before- and now he was afraid. He described how these fairies had control over the elements, what more power could there be if you could manipulate the very things that make us? The reference to the villain in Kinda and Snakedance, the Mara, was music to my hears despite my non-fondness of the two classic stories. But any classic reference in Doctor Who, let alone Torchwood, is extremely welcomed!
Estelle called Jack, she was being attacked. The Torchwood team were on their way. Estelle didn't want to go outside, but she was calling for her cat to be protected. Sadly, the fairies showed their evil side, as they took control. Estelle briefly left her house and before she knew it the doors were locked and the fairies were approaching. Tosh discovered in the SUV that it was raining in one extremely small location. It was raining over Estelle, her fairy parade was over. She drowned to her death. As Torchwood arrive at her house Jack is absolutely devastated. He confirmed that the photo seen was not his father, but it was indeed him. He revealed the history he and Estelle shared. It wasn't quite confirmed but it seemed like they were married. He also talked of how he knew about the fairies. He was in charge of an armed squad, they were on a train in 1909, travelling through a tunnel and from out of nowhere the fairies struck. 15 men were immediately killed, they payed the price of killing a chosen one. Something they had done while drunk driving through a village. The fairies were outraged. This revealed why Jasmine was so special- she must be a chosen one.
As Gwen arrives home, she's with her beloved and humorous boyfriend Rhys. But they've been robbed. Gwen was both outraged and scared. She didn't want her work interfering at home and with her personal life.
Jasmine revealed that she really disliked Roy, her soon to be stepfather and she blatantly ignored him. As he took her to school, she was waving at the fairies. She claimed them to be friends. She certainly was an oddity. At school, Jasmine was bullied, but as seen previously, the fairies were protecting her. There was a freak wind in the school play yard, but it was only there. Nowhere else. The fairies were again manipulating the elements. Meanwhile at home, Roy was building a fence preventing Jasmine to go to the bottom of the garden she spent so much time. Her connection with the fairies was thwarted.
After the news of the freak wind, Torchwood investigate at the school. And for the first time, Gwen sees the fairies. She's scared. As the teachers explain what happened during the weather event, that Jasmine was protected, Torchwood conclude that Jasmine is who they're looking for. They've found the chosen one.
At home, Jasmine attempts to explain the fairies to her mother. She is honest but her mother ridicules the claim. She goes outside to meet the fairies, but the fence is in her way. She disapproved. Would she have to attend the party that was ongoing at the house to celebrate her mother and soon to be stepfathers further togetherness? Roy arrogantly comes to the fence and seems like he's going to mock Jasmine. He seemed proud of preventing her her enjoyment. Jasmine was angry and bit him and kicked him. Roy angrily struck her. This would result in his death. He'd outraged the fairies. Bad weather was approaching the party, and it was bringing the fairies with it. But they were now seen from an extreme close up. They were much more than fairies. They were alien-like and looked plain evil. Torchwood had arrived.
Roy was brutally murdered, and petals were shoved down his throat. The fairies turned to Jack and he was their next target. If they controlled the elements, could they kill Jack? It was a risk Gwen wasn't prepared to take as she saved him. Jasmine now climbed through a gape in the fence caused by the ruthless arrival of the fairies. She was careless of others. All that mattered was her and the fairies.
Jack desperately tries to bring Jasmine back. Was the forest really an illusion as he claimed? Whether it was or not, it was clear the young girl was indoctrinated. Jack demands the fairies find another chosen one, but that was much easier said than done. Jasmine had already been chosen. Jack realised that if she stayed, then more innocent people would die. Jack needed the assuring of the fairies that she wouldn't be harmed. She would in fact live forever. Jack reluctantly allows Jasmine to walk off into the distance, she's the fairies' now. Jack was annoyed, but it was the only way to save the world. Others simply cannot become chosen ones. Jasmine's mother was distraught, Jack was extremely sorry and the Torchwood team were disgusted. As the story came to a close, a close up of the picture taken by Estelle was seen. Jasmine was a fairy. She was always going to become one.
My analysis;
To conclude, Small Worlds was a very mesmerising and magical episode. It certainly had a majestic feel. I think it was really well done. We learned a lot more about Jack and his past and the villains were certainly excellent. The power they possess is scary, but they're sensible and understanding thankfully. This, like all four before it, was simply sublime and I really hope the high standard continues in the episodes and seasons to come. I thoroughly enjoyed! Jasmine was a fantastic character and I thought the fairies were very mystical. Jack's bold decision to let Jasmine go with the fairies was interesting, but it was the only way. A courageous decision. Something I admired, Jack's character is really growing now!
Rating; Wonderful episode- 10/10!
