Torchwood #19: Reset

Torchwood Team;
• Captain Jack
• Gwen
• Owen
• Tosh
• Ianto

Notable Characters;
• Martha Jones- Former companion of the Tenth Doctor
• Adam Copley- Manager of Pharm

Detailed Plot;

An excellent episode to continue the relatively high standard of the season so far! It begins very mysteriously and excitingly with a Weevil roaming the alley streets of Cardiff, and the Torchwood team were after it. They got close but as they were chasing they came across a dead man.

Inside the hub, somebody of high importance had arrived. It was discovered that the dead man was Meredith Roberts. Jack's VIP guest entered the hub and it was none other than Martha Jones! She was glad to see Jack and it was clear she was now working for UNIT. Deaths in a way similar to Meredith's were increasing and there was a strange pattern developing across South Wales in particular.

Martha had arrived to finish Owen's autopsy and immediately there was banter and flirting between the pair. Tosh was trying to access the medical files of Meredith but it seemed someone or something was purposely crashing the system and making the data hidden, and irretrievable.

Jack and Martha were alone together and there were many references to Last of the Time Lords and the questioning of whether Martha missed the Doctor. It seemed clear that it was the Doctor who got Martha her job in UNIT as she was recommended by an incredibly high source. Now with Gwen, Martha was the wrong side of sexual confusion between her and Jack! It was very comical, and brilliantly new as Torchwood allows much more in terms of explicitness compared with Doctor Who.

Owen was now desperately trying to impress Martha, but failed miserably. The team got news of a new case where a women was attacked in similar circumstances but had survived. Just like Meredith though, her medical files seemed wiped. The method of killing was established, whoever the hit man was he was killing by injecting the eye with a needle, a visible puncture was on the victims. But what was he injecting them with? That question was soon answered. Ammonium hydroxide. It seemed he/she was trying to get rid of evidence of any medical illness or condition somehow!

Tosh was digging deep into both her computer knowledge and the medical systems but wasn't finding much luck. Gwen and Ianto paid a visit to the women who'd survived an attack and after the location of the murder attempt was established, it was clear the murderer didn't want any witnesses. No CCTV, he/she was killing in the likes of woods and back alleys. It was a great conspiracy, so who was killing?

A student friend of a victim was briefly interviewed and he claimed that his friend, now dead, had been cured of diabetes. How was that possible? Maurice, the women in the hospital, gave Torchwood its key information. She claimed that she was cured of HIV by Pharm, a medical company who'd given her a 'reset.' She'd signed a contract to stay quiet but astonishingly she seemed to have had her body reset to factory settings if you like. Incredible! Maurice suddenly became uncomfortable and an internal battle aroused, and she died. Some sort of pheromones escaped her body in a swarm, and Owen got his hands upon a specimen.

Owen knew it was alien and without a host, it'd died. He described how it was similar to a computer anti-virus and could easily reset the human body to factory settings. It seemed Pharm was bundled with alien parasites. The company was researched and it was in with the government and had highly advanced security and systems, strong enough to be able to wipe medical records. Jackpot.

Jack met with Aaron Copley, the Pharm manager. He was touchy and clearly lying and even denied the team access to the research clinic, something Torchwood wasn't used to. In the SUV before leaving, Jack got the highest alien readings that side of the Rift inside the plant. They had aliens alright.

Jack comically mentioned a recent bad experience with a politician, referring to Harold Saxon (The Master of course) from The Sound of Drums. Martha volunteered herself to ironically, become a volunteer of the Pharm. Yet more references to Last of the Time Lords, Jack agreed saying how he'd rely on Martha if the world depended on it, and that he had. Ianto gave out the instructions to Martha of what to do once inside. She was interested in the relationship between he and Jack.

Martha was given contacts, body powered, that were a camera and could even receive messages from the hub! She was given a cover story- meet Samantha Jones. Once inside Pharm she was given a blood test. Professor Copley arrived and just when it seemed Martha had lost his interest, she came up with another cover to get inside. She pretended she'd had a hepatitis infection and upon 'revealing' this, she was given access and accepted straight away. She signed and was now in. But it was to be a long night ahead.

Owen admitted his attraction to Martha but referenced the supposed pool tournament the team were to have as discussed in Adam. But Tosh told Owen the truth, of how she wanted a date with him, and to her surprise he said yes.

Martha exited her accommodation and was searching around, cautiously. Someone was approaching her through the corridors but she came to a locked door that would contain pivotal information. Through the contacts, the hub was decoding the lock and in the nick of time she was through and safe. She immediately went for the computer and tried hacking in but after a few instructions Tosh now had control of the computer and the entire Pharm network systems. Through the network the alien was saw, it was a mayfly. Jack quickly ordered Martha to get out now but as she did alarms were ringing out through the plant.

Pharm's hit man was found- Billy Davies. He was the assassin. Meanwhile, it seemed a creature had escaped within Pharm and it was highly dangerous. Suddenly, a monster mayfly was after Martha! It was humongous, similar to the Vespiform from The Unicorn and the Wasp. The security found the mayfly but now Martha's signal back to the hub was lost. And she was shot in the neck with a tranquilizer.

Gwen had tracked Billy Davies via his phone and just as he was about to finish off another victim, he was caught. Martha was now seen being interrogated by Copley, but she was of course trapped down onto a bed. Aaron knew of Torchwood and told Martha that any attempts of her pretending not to know were futile. But this wasn't the only interrogation going on, as in the hub Billy Davies was being questioned and the Weevil was used to make him talk. He told the information and how the victims would die anyway, it was a side effect. But the mayflies got rid of that side effect. It was all confusing but interestingly mysterious!

Aaron Copley was mightily impressed with Martha's body (not the sight, although how can you not be?). She'd had greatly mutated lymphocytes and it was thanks to her ventures through space and time. She had a near perfect immune system! This was to be used as the model for Copley to make the perfect drug. Aaron wanted to test some imperfects on her, to see just how strong her immune system really was.

Inside the hub and Billy Davies suddenly coughed up blood, he had a mayfly within him, and it was pretty big! Owen used the tool that concentrated on destroying a very precise and small area of matter, the same thing he'd attempted to impress Martha with earlier but miserably failed. He used the tool, and destroyed the mayfly, but killed Billy too. That obviously wasn't meant to occur. Tosh though had come up with a plan to get the Torchwood team into Pharm and rescue Martha.

A car arrived at the Pharm and easily got past security, using the body of Billy to make it look as if he was driving the car. Somewhat comical, Torchwood were now inside. They stormed the facility where Martha was but despite her surviving, she wasn't in a good state. She'd reached a stage where nobody had ever passed but a large mayfly creature was visibly beneath Martha's skin. Her perfect figure was being bombarded from underneath.

Jack found a Weevil and it was being horrifically mistreated as a test subject . Pharm was using aliens as tests and metabolising them. They were abusing the aliens, Jack was closing the place down. Tosh had control via the computer and in shutting down the company, put the miserable aliens out of their misery. She crashed the system and it was now wiped and destroyed. The plant was flooded with gas, the aliens were slaves no more.

Martha though was still in trouble and Owen was preparing the tool again that had killed Billy, he'd sighted the mayfly and destroyed it! After a brief scare, Martha was okay. Tosh finalised the shut down and the aliens were to die. But as Torchwood were leaving, Aaron was armed and approached them. He shot Owen in the chest, Jack killed him dead. But in a shocking climax, Owen was dead.

My analysis;
Overall, absolutely brilliant! Adding Martha to the already great Torchwood team was perfect and the six worked tremendously well together! The plot of Reset itself was very good, mysterious, clever and enjoyable! The banter between Martha and Owen was excellent and I really liked Tosh getting her date with the latter. Jack and Martha talking about the Doctor and The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords was brilliant with a lot of good references! I thought Aaron Copley was a great character and I loved the idea of a human anti-virus and resetting the body to factory settings! Gwen was rather quiet in this one which was unusual but Martha filled the void wonderfully. Outstanding plot, a mysterious Pharm and a fantastic dimension to the Torchwood team with Martha, Reset was absolutely fantastic!

Rating; 10/10

My 50th Anniversary Tribute: The Eleventh Doctor

Matt Smith is my Doctor and the greatest Doctor. Truly brilliant! A youthful man filled with all the wisdom and hurt of his 10 previous incarnations. Totally bonkers, comical but serious and absolutely the Doctor. I think why I like him so much is partly down to Steven Moffat with his absolutely sublime writing, throwing in many alias' such as the Silence, Trenzalore and the mysterious crack in Amy's wall.

Matt Smith arrives on the scene right at the end of The End of Time and his brief stint in the serial was a wonderful introduction.

The Eleventh Hour was a wonderful introductory Matt Smith episode. His youthful craziness is just perfect. Fish fingers and custard anyone? Little Amelia Pond was a great way to introduce Amy as companion and the story itself was great!

Amy was now on board the TARDIS and her first adventure in The Beast Below was a strong and solid one! I loved how she was a companion in her pyjamas!

Matt Smith's early days were impressing and Victory of the Daleks was no different. An incredible story that saw the Daleks get a new, debatable paint job. The story itself was outstanding though!

It was inevitable with Steven Moffat as head writer now that his genius villains would return. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone was a fantastic double episode that saw the return of River Song as well as the Weeping Angels!

The Vampires of Venice came next and it saw Rory join the TARDIS crew, with the loveable companion pair still awaiting to get married. The episode was excellent and seemed to be the first reference of the Silence. Amy's Choice was also a fantastic episode and I really loved the confusion and intrigue!

The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood was a wonderful double episode that saw the return of the Silurians in a great new design! The death of Rory was certainly a shocker!

Vincent and the Doctor was an excellently emotional episode! It really had it all and was thoroughly good! The Lodger followed and saw another huge reference to the Silence and James Cordon brilliantly guest starring.

The season finale was incredible, simply mesmerising! River Song was back, Rory was an Auton and the Doctor was improsoned by his greatest foes all united as one! The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang also saw a stone Dalek and the cracks in time cleared up as well as Amy and Rory getting married! The season was over in style and Matt Smith had arrived on the scene in tremendous style.

The Eleventh Doctor's first Christmas special was incredible. Katherine Jenkins wonderfully guest starred in A Christmas Carol that was just wonderful.

Smith's second series as the Doctor started off amazingly with what felt like a finale! The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon was incredible seeing the debut of the Silence, River returning and the moon landing being significant in the whoniverse.

Oh, the Doctor died too.

The Curse of the Black Spot had a lot to follow and despite it being pretty good it was Smith's poorest episode yet. But what followed was his best yet.

The Doctor's Wife was simply perfection. The thought of Time Lord survival, the TARDIS in sexy female form and even an Ood! The bubble universe setting with House basically a Time Lord junkyard was incredible. The conversations and emotional relationship between the Doctor and Idris was just magnificent. Simply brilliant.

The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People was a very enjoyable double episode that saw two Doctors, loads of doppelgängers and an all out excellent story!

A Good Man goes to War was yet again another incredible episode and a marvellous midseason finale! Amy gave birth, had her baby kidnapped then had her back in the Doctor's cot! Madame Vastra, Strax and co became the gang and the story was just great! Oh yeah, River Song is the daughter of Amy and Rory!

Let's Kill Hitler was a brilliant episode that saw Hitler being locked in a cupboard, Melody Pond regenerating into the River Song we all know. A fantastic episode!

Night Terrors came next and wasn't the greatest episode and is sadly the only real flaw of the Matt Smith era. The Girl who Waited was a vast improvement and emotional episode for Amy, showing the dark side and sacrifices of the Doctor.

The God Complex was outstanding yet again like the huge majority of the Smith era in general. I'd just love to see what was behind the Doctor's door!

Closing Time saw the Cybermen return in style in an episode I very much enjoyed! The cybermats making a long awaited return was excellent!

The Wedding of River Song was an amazing season finale that saw the Silence back as well as River Song, who married the Doctor! The developing relationship was certainly magical and it was clear the love was true. An all out incredible episode!

The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe was a bloody brilliant Christmas special! Another emotionally excellent episode.

Matt Smith's final season started off incredibly with Asylum of the Daleks. The impossible thought of Amy and Rory wanting divorce, but then the Parliament of the Daleks wanted the help of the Doctor! Skaro was back and the disgust of the Doctor throughout was perfect. The birth of the ultimate mystery started here with Oswin Oswald, who was actually a Dalek! Where did she get the milk for the soufflĂ©s? She did though rewrite the Doctor out of the entire pathweb of the Daleks! Seeing many generations of the Daleks was incredible also.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was a great episode and really was what it said on the tin! A Town called Mercy was pretty good but the Wild West is my most hated part of history and I really disliked the setting!

The Power of Three was a marvellous episode with a really great concept! Mysterious till the end and despite the rushed and abrupt ending it was still really good!

The Angels take Manhattan was an extremely emotional midseason finale! The Weeping Angels were back, as was River Song and Amy and Rory showed their complete and utter love for one another, departing the TARDIS by the touch of an Angel. A beautiful departure filled with emotion. But with Amy and Rory gone, it gave the breakthrough for my favourite ever Doctor-Companion pairing.

A new TARDIS, a new jacket, a new attitude. The Doctor was gonna lay back, but we knew that wouldn't last for long. Clara was introduced (ish) and she was spectacular in her first (ish) episode as a Victorian waitress/babysitter.

The Snowmen was fantastic and saw the subtle return of the Great Intelligence! The Doctor's cloud and staircase was mesmerising and the plot of the episode was outstanding! But Clara died, again, and then was seen by her own gravestone! The Doctor was intrigued by her, she was the impossible girl and he set his sights on solving the mystery.

The Bells of Saint John saw the official birth of the greatest TARDIS pair in the 50 year history of Doctor Who! Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman just seem perfect together! A wonderful episode and Clara joined the snog box... I mean TARDIS.

The Rings of Akhaten saw Clara have her first venture and she was clearly brilliant from the off. Clever, funny, beautiful and fantastic. What more do you want from a companion? Already it was good to see that she was able to manipulate the Doctor, in a good way. The episode plot was magical and featured an iconic scene with an incredible speech by the Doctor! Matt Smith performed outstandingly as the Time Lord, arguably his greatest moment.

Cold War saw the long awaited return of the infamous Ice Warriors. Thankfully Skaldak remained evil, but was taken  from his armoured shell! I disapproved of that but the episode was still very good!

I absolutely loved Hide! It was mysterious, intriguing and just excellent! A wonderful plot!

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS saw Clara in the most amazing attire, stuck in the depths of a broken TARDIS! Briefly she found out the name of the Doctor but soon forgot, but the episode was outstanding and is right up there with my favourite Matt Smith episodes. The Crimson Horror was a great follow up and didn't see either the Doctor or Clara in great amounts but left centre stage to Vastra, Jenny and the brilliantly comical Strax.

Nightmare in Silver was yet again another magnificent Smith episode that saw the actor himself play a sublime performance! Cybermen playing chess, then upgrading to a new design (an intriguing one!) and then the Doctor playing chess against himself (of sorts, actually the Cyberplanner) for his own brain! A truly excellent episode that saw Clara do brilliantly in command.

But then came the season finale, The Name of the Doctor. And it was my all time favourite New Who episode! Truly spectacular.

The greatest scene ever occurred with Clara's mystery explained and we saw Hartnell's First Doctor steal the TARDIS from Gallifrey!

The Great Intelligence was back, this time with Whispermen and he led the Doctor and his friends to Trenzalore, the forbidden place of the Doctor. His grave. A scary thought, the Doctor does die eventually.

But whilst he's alive, he's got Clara protecting him as she jumps into his timeline to fight off the Great Intelligence! A fantastic concept that I just adored! The episode tied up so many loose ends but then gave us the biggest cliffhanger of them all!

John Hurt was introduced as the Doctor! An extremely intriguing thought and one we've had to wait SIX MONTHS to resolve! But now we know he's the 'War Doctor' and is responsible for the end of the Time War. Or so it seems that way.

The Matt Smith era will sadly be over at Christmas but I'm sure he'll give us an incredible send off! He's been sensational, fez wearing and quirky. He got married and made bow ties cool no doubt! Matt Smith, my Doctor. The greatest Doctor. Geronimo!

But now The Day of the Doctor looms and is just a few hours away! 50 years to the day since Doctor Who debuted in 1963, and it's been brilliant ever since- a huge understatement. But here's to the next 50 years and to an incredible Anniversary Special!

My 50th Anniversary Tribute: The Tenth Doctor

The Tenth Doctor is the most loved Time Lord among modern fans who never watched the classic series, and despite him being an outstanding Doctor, he's not the best, not by a long way. This has nothing to do with David Tennant himself, but more his fans. It baffles me why Who 'fans' disregard the Classic series she somewhat the Matt Smith era as they just go nuts over Tennant. It confuses me but that's the rant over, now onto Tennant's brilliance!

Tennant's reign begins in the 2005 Children in Need special where he has his brief introduction to Rose and aims to go to her home time. Feeling the effects of regeneration, this isn't as easy as it sounds. It's short and sweet and a good little prelude of Tennant's introduction.

The Tenth Doctor begins by saving the Earth in his pyjamas! Fighting the invading Sycorax, the Doctor finds out he's a no second chance kind of guy in this incarnation. The Christmas Invasion kicked off the Tenth Doctor's reign in style.

New Earth started off David Tennant's first full season as the Doctor very well. It saw the return of Cassandra and the Face of Boe and was just a very good episode! Tooth and Claw followed and saw the set up of Torchwood, Queen Victoria and a Werewolf!

School Reunion came next and for the classic fans this was a humongous treat! Not only did the brilliant Sarah Jane return, but so did K9! The Krillitanes were excellent villains and the episode was just marvellous.

The Girl in the Fireplace really brought the romantic side for the Doctor. Seemingly falling in love whilst battling the Clockwork Men, with Mickey having his first adventure as companion. A great episode!

The first two parter of the series, Rise of the Cybermen/The Age Steel, sees the technical return of the Cybermen. Not quite the same as the Classic series, these metal monsters were from a parallel universe. It saw Mickey depart from the TARDIS, a new Cyber Controller and a fantastic two part episode!

The series went on in good standard with The Idiot's Lantern and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. Two very good serials! The standard then sadly considerably dropped with the worst ever Doctor Who story, Love and Monsters, and the forgettable Fear Her. But if anything, the poorness of these two episodes made the finale even better!

For the first time ever, the Daleks and Cybermen encountered each other! Instead of forming an alliance they battled each other! A dream come true for all Classic fans. The Cult of Skaro were magnificent, characters returned from the parallel universe and it saw the most emotional departure of a companion ever. The heartbreaking exit of Rose made this serial even better in its quality! The Doctor clearly had a lot of feelings for his companion, something new to the Time Lord.

The Runaway Bride Christmas special was hilarious and outstanding! The introduction of Donna Noble was magnificent and the Empress of Racnoss was a great enemy and it was also marvellous to hear the first mention of Gallifrey in the new series.

Tennant's second season kicked off in style with Smith and Jones. Hospitals on the moon, rhino space police in the Judoon and the introduction of Martha as companion- this episode really was an eventful series opener.

The high standard continued in the season with the excellent The Shakespeare Code, which saw Shakespeare seen for the first time in 41 years in Who and Witches, and Gridlock,  which saw the Face of Boe return with an impossible revelation and just a great episode!

Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks was an outstanding serial with the Cult of Skaro returning and even altering the blueprints of the Empire State Building! Dalek Sec even became human!

The Lazarus Experiment was sadly not a great serial dropping the high standard but then 42 really was unique! It seemed the sun was the villain!

Human Nature/The Family of Blood was simply sensational. Insanely good. One of my all time favourites, this saw the Doctor become a human and fall in love! The Family of Blood were outstanding enemies and I loved the Scarecrows

Blink followed in more excellent style and with it barely featuring the Doctor and Martha, Sally Sparrow was a magnificent character who I feel had the credentials of a companion! The Weeping Angels made their debut and the concept of them is just amazingly good.

The triple episode season finally is another instant classic seeing the return of the Master who leaves the Doctor, Martha and returning Captain Jack stranded at the end of the universe, stealing the TARDIS and regenerating and then becoming Prime Minister! Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords was incredible and saw the sad exit of Martha Jones as companion.

Time Crash was a fantastic Children in Need special seeing the return of the Fifth Doctor! Comically brilliant as I mentioned in my 5th Doctor tribute, I adored this minisode!

Voyage of the Damned was pretty good but it was certainly the poorest Christmas special as of yet. Titanic in space was interesting but I wasn't too fond of the Heavenly Host, although Astrid Peth and Max Capricorn were good!

Season 30 (or series 4) kicked off in comically excellent form! Partners in Crime saw the hilarious return of Donna Noble, living cute fat and a shock cameo from Rose! It was great! The season was largely brilliant and The Fires of Pompeii followed in fantastic style.

Planet of the Ood saw a return to a part of the universe the Doctor hadn't been since The Sensorites and the Ood returning was very enjoyable! A very good episode!

The Sontarans marvellously returned in David Tennant's era and were outstanding, somewhat modernised for war and they were still at war with the Rutans! The Sontaran Strategem/The Poison Sky also saw the return of Martha Jones and UNIT and was just brilliant!

I absolutely adored the character of Jenny in The Doctor's Daughter and I still hope that one day she'll return as companion, despite my complete and utter adoration of current companion Clara! A great episode and Martha being there added to the greatness! The Unicorn and the Wasp followed and was excellent with a great murder mystery, Agatha Christie and a giant wasp!

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead was excellent, featuring the introduction of River Song and the chilling enemy of the Vashta Nerada! Midnight followed and wasn't the greatest but it was just waiting for the season finale to come.

Turn Left was a brilliant prequel of sorts to the season finale. The concept was outstanding and the thought of no Doctor just proved his importance! Rose's return was great!

The Stolen Earth/Journey's End was an incredible season finale seeing the Daleks conquer Earth, Davros and Dalek Caan returning and basically all of the Tenth Doctor's companions featuring! It saw Donna emotionally depart as companion sadly suffering the same fate as Jamie and Zoe in forgetting her adventures in the TARDIS. It also featured arguably the greatest cliffhanger in history with what we thought was an early regeneration!

Tennant never did a full series again but he did have 4 specials left in his locker. The Next Doctor was incredible and I adored the concept and ridiculousness! The Cybermen brilliantly returned also!

Planet of the Dead and The Waters of Mars were both very good with excellent guest cast and what I call fill in companions. The latter was just lacking the return of the Ice Warriors!

The End of Time was a phenomenal send off for the Tenth Doctor. It really had it all! The Master returned and made himself every single human, then encouraged something that on first broadcast had my jaw dropped! The return of the Time Lords, right in the midst of the Time War! It was just an incredible serial and I'm certain that we saw the mother of the Doctor for the first time.

After paying one last visit to each of his incarnation's companions, the Tenth Doctor emotionally regenerated causing the destruction of the TARDIS interior! His era ended in style.

The Tenth Doctor was my first Doctor, but I consider Matt Smith to be my Doctor, but Tennant certainly was brilliant!
