My 50th Anniversary Tribute: The Eleventh Doctor

Matt Smith is my Doctor and the greatest Doctor. Truly brilliant! A youthful man filled with all the wisdom and hurt of his 10 previous incarnations. Totally bonkers, comical but serious and absolutely the Doctor. I think why I like him so much is partly down to Steven Moffat with his absolutely sublime writing, throwing in many alias' such as the Silence, Trenzalore and the mysterious crack in Amy's wall.

Matt Smith arrives on the scene right at the end of The End of Time and his brief stint in the serial was a wonderful introduction.

The Eleventh Hour was a wonderful introductory Matt Smith episode. His youthful craziness is just perfect. Fish fingers and custard anyone? Little Amelia Pond was a great way to introduce Amy as companion and the story itself was great!

Amy was now on board the TARDIS and her first adventure in The Beast Below was a strong and solid one! I loved how she was a companion in her pyjamas!

Matt Smith's early days were impressing and Victory of the Daleks was no different. An incredible story that saw the Daleks get a new, debatable paint job. The story itself was outstanding though!

It was inevitable with Steven Moffat as head writer now that his genius villains would return. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone was a fantastic double episode that saw the return of River Song as well as the Weeping Angels!

The Vampires of Venice came next and it saw Rory join the TARDIS crew, with the loveable companion pair still awaiting to get married. The episode was excellent and seemed to be the first reference of the Silence. Amy's Choice was also a fantastic episode and I really loved the confusion and intrigue!

The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood was a wonderful double episode that saw the return of the Silurians in a great new design! The death of Rory was certainly a shocker!

Vincent and the Doctor was an excellently emotional episode! It really had it all and was thoroughly good! The Lodger followed and saw another huge reference to the Silence and James Cordon brilliantly guest starring.

The season finale was incredible, simply mesmerising! River Song was back, Rory was an Auton and the Doctor was improsoned by his greatest foes all united as one! The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang also saw a stone Dalek and the cracks in time cleared up as well as Amy and Rory getting married! The season was over in style and Matt Smith had arrived on the scene in tremendous style.

The Eleventh Doctor's first Christmas special was incredible. Katherine Jenkins wonderfully guest starred in A Christmas Carol that was just wonderful.

Smith's second series as the Doctor started off amazingly with what felt like a finale! The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon was incredible seeing the debut of the Silence, River returning and the moon landing being significant in the whoniverse.

Oh, the Doctor died too.

The Curse of the Black Spot had a lot to follow and despite it being pretty good it was Smith's poorest episode yet. But what followed was his best yet.

The Doctor's Wife was simply perfection. The thought of Time Lord survival, the TARDIS in sexy female form and even an Ood! The bubble universe setting with House basically a Time Lord junkyard was incredible. The conversations and emotional relationship between the Doctor and Idris was just magnificent. Simply brilliant.

The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People was a very enjoyable double episode that saw two Doctors, loads of doppelgängers and an all out excellent story!

A Good Man goes to War was yet again another incredible episode and a marvellous midseason finale! Amy gave birth, had her baby kidnapped then had her back in the Doctor's cot! Madame Vastra, Strax and co became the gang and the story was just great! Oh yeah, River Song is the daughter of Amy and Rory!

Let's Kill Hitler was a brilliant episode that saw Hitler being locked in a cupboard, Melody Pond regenerating into the River Song we all know. A fantastic episode!

Night Terrors came next and wasn't the greatest episode and is sadly the only real flaw of the Matt Smith era. The Girl who Waited was a vast improvement and emotional episode for Amy, showing the dark side and sacrifices of the Doctor.

The God Complex was outstanding yet again like the huge majority of the Smith era in general. I'd just love to see what was behind the Doctor's door!

Closing Time saw the Cybermen return in style in an episode I very much enjoyed! The cybermats making a long awaited return was excellent!

The Wedding of River Song was an amazing season finale that saw the Silence back as well as River Song, who married the Doctor! The developing relationship was certainly magical and it was clear the love was true. An all out incredible episode!

The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe was a bloody brilliant Christmas special! Another emotionally excellent episode.

Matt Smith's final season started off incredibly with Asylum of the Daleks. The impossible thought of Amy and Rory wanting divorce, but then the Parliament of the Daleks wanted the help of the Doctor! Skaro was back and the disgust of the Doctor throughout was perfect. The birth of the ultimate mystery started here with Oswin Oswald, who was actually a Dalek! Where did she get the milk for the soufflĂ©s? She did though rewrite the Doctor out of the entire pathweb of the Daleks! Seeing many generations of the Daleks was incredible also.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was a great episode and really was what it said on the tin! A Town called Mercy was pretty good but the Wild West is my most hated part of history and I really disliked the setting!

The Power of Three was a marvellous episode with a really great concept! Mysterious till the end and despite the rushed and abrupt ending it was still really good!

The Angels take Manhattan was an extremely emotional midseason finale! The Weeping Angels were back, as was River Song and Amy and Rory showed their complete and utter love for one another, departing the TARDIS by the touch of an Angel. A beautiful departure filled with emotion. But with Amy and Rory gone, it gave the breakthrough for my favourite ever Doctor-Companion pairing.

A new TARDIS, a new jacket, a new attitude. The Doctor was gonna lay back, but we knew that wouldn't last for long. Clara was introduced (ish) and she was spectacular in her first (ish) episode as a Victorian waitress/babysitter.

The Snowmen was fantastic and saw the subtle return of the Great Intelligence! The Doctor's cloud and staircase was mesmerising and the plot of the episode was outstanding! But Clara died, again, and then was seen by her own gravestone! The Doctor was intrigued by her, she was the impossible girl and he set his sights on solving the mystery.

The Bells of Saint John saw the official birth of the greatest TARDIS pair in the 50 year history of Doctor Who! Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman just seem perfect together! A wonderful episode and Clara joined the snog box... I mean TARDIS.

The Rings of Akhaten saw Clara have her first venture and she was clearly brilliant from the off. Clever, funny, beautiful and fantastic. What more do you want from a companion? Already it was good to see that she was able to manipulate the Doctor, in a good way. The episode plot was magical and featured an iconic scene with an incredible speech by the Doctor! Matt Smith performed outstandingly as the Time Lord, arguably his greatest moment.

Cold War saw the long awaited return of the infamous Ice Warriors. Thankfully Skaldak remained evil, but was taken  from his armoured shell! I disapproved of that but the episode was still very good!

I absolutely loved Hide! It was mysterious, intriguing and just excellent! A wonderful plot!

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS saw Clara in the most amazing attire, stuck in the depths of a broken TARDIS! Briefly she found out the name of the Doctor but soon forgot, but the episode was outstanding and is right up there with my favourite Matt Smith episodes. The Crimson Horror was a great follow up and didn't see either the Doctor or Clara in great amounts but left centre stage to Vastra, Jenny and the brilliantly comical Strax.

Nightmare in Silver was yet again another magnificent Smith episode that saw the actor himself play a sublime performance! Cybermen playing chess, then upgrading to a new design (an intriguing one!) and then the Doctor playing chess against himself (of sorts, actually the Cyberplanner) for his own brain! A truly excellent episode that saw Clara do brilliantly in command.

But then came the season finale, The Name of the Doctor. And it was my all time favourite New Who episode! Truly spectacular.

The greatest scene ever occurred with Clara's mystery explained and we saw Hartnell's First Doctor steal the TARDIS from Gallifrey!

The Great Intelligence was back, this time with Whispermen and he led the Doctor and his friends to Trenzalore, the forbidden place of the Doctor. His grave. A scary thought, the Doctor does die eventually.

But whilst he's alive, he's got Clara protecting him as she jumps into his timeline to fight off the Great Intelligence! A fantastic concept that I just adored! The episode tied up so many loose ends but then gave us the biggest cliffhanger of them all!

John Hurt was introduced as the Doctor! An extremely intriguing thought and one we've had to wait SIX MONTHS to resolve! But now we know he's the 'War Doctor' and is responsible for the end of the Time War. Or so it seems that way.

The Matt Smith era will sadly be over at Christmas but I'm sure he'll give us an incredible send off! He's been sensational, fez wearing and quirky. He got married and made bow ties cool no doubt! Matt Smith, my Doctor. The greatest Doctor. Geronimo!

But now The Day of the Doctor looms and is just a few hours away! 50 years to the day since Doctor Who debuted in 1963, and it's been brilliant ever since- a huge understatement. But here's to the next 50 years and to an incredible Anniversary Special!
